Overview:
The Data Center Building Engineer is responsible for ensuring optimal performance, reliability, and uptime of mission-critical facility systems within a data center environment. This role involves hands-on technical maintenance, monitoring, and repair of electrical, mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, and building automation systems (BAS/BMS) supporting 24/7 operations.
Key Responsibilities:
Operate, maintain, and repair critical facility systems, including electrical distribution, UPS systems, generators, switchgear, PDUs, CRAC/CRAH units, chillers, pumps, and air handlers.
Perform daily rounds, system inspections, and preventative maintenance to ensure uptime and energy efficiency.
Respond to alarms, faults, and outages in real time, performing root-cause analysis and corrective action.
Monitor and adjust building management and automation systems (BAS/BMS) for environmental stability and energy optimization.
Assist with infrastructure upgrades, commissioning, and decommissioning of equipment.
Maintain accurate maintenance records, SOPs/MOPs/EOPs, and compliance documentation.
Support vendor management, coordinate maintenance schedules, and ensure adherence to safety and operational protocols.
Participate in on-call rotation and provide emergency response coverage for critical incidents.
Qualifications:
3–7 years of experience in data center, mission-critical, or commercial building operations.
Working knowledge of electrical (480V/277V/208V/120V), mechanical, and control systems.
Familiarity with UPS, generators, HVAC systems, and chilled-water plant operations.
Proficiency in BAS/BMS systems and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
EPA Universal Certification preferred.
Journeyman or trade license in electrical, mechanical, or HVAC a plus.
Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and technical diagrams.
Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
Typical Schedule:
Full-time | May include rotating shifts, nights, weekends, or on-call availability.
Work Environment:
Data center facility with exposure to electrical and mechanical systems, confined spaces, and temperature-controlled environments.
